Hexagram 15 謙 changing to hexagram 44 姤
Changing lines (counted from the bottom): 2, 4, 5, 6.
What to read
Four changing lines: read the two unchanged lines of the resulting hexagram; the lower one is the main one. (Rule set out by Zhu Xi in the Yixue qimeng.)
The first line, divided, shows how its subject should be kept (like a carriage) tied and fastened to a metal drag, in which case with firm correctness there will be good fortune. (But) if he move in any direction, evil will appear. He will be (like) a lean pig, which is sure to keep jumping about.
The third line, undivided, shows one from whose buttocks the skin has been stripped so that he walks with difficulty. The position is perilous, but there will be no great error.
The two hexagrams
Khien indicates progress and success. The superior man, (being humble as it implies), will have a (good) issue (to his undertakings).
Kâu shows a female who is bold and strong. It will not be good to marry (such) a female.
The changing lines of hexagram 15
| Line | Chinese | Legge |
|---|---|---|
| The second line, divided, shows us humility that has made itself recognised. With firm correctness there will be good fortune. |
| The fourth line, divided, shows one, whose action would be in every way advantageous, stirring up (the more) his humility. |
| The fifth line, divided, shows one who, without being rich, is able to employ his neighbours. He may advantageously use the force of arms. All his movements will be advantageous. |
| The sixth line, divided, shows us humility that has made itself recognised. The subject of it will with advantage put his hosts in motion; but (he will only) punish his own towns and state. |
