Hexagram 33 遯 changing to hexagram 47 困

Changing lines (counted from the bottom): 2, 3, 6.

What to read

Three changing lines: read the judgments of the original and the resulting hexagram; the original is the main one. (Rule set out by Zhu Xi in the Yixue qimeng.)

Judgment of hexagram 33 遯

亨。小利貞。

Thun indicates successful progress (in its circumstances). To a small extent it will (still) be advantageous to be firm and correct.

Judgment of hexagram 47 困

亨,貞大人吉,无咎,有言不信。

In (the condition denoted by) Khwăn there may (yet be) progress and success. For the firm and correct, the (really) great man, there will be good fortune. He will fall into no error. If he make speeches, his words cannot be made good.

The changing lines of hexagram 33

LineChineseLegge
2執之用黃牛之革,莫之勝說。The second line, divided, shows its subject holding (his purpose) fast as if by a (thong made from the) hide of a yellow ox, which cannot be broken.
3係遯,有疾厲,畜臣妾吉。The third line, undivided, shows one retiring but bound,—to his distress and peril. (If he were to deal with his binders as in) nourishing a servant or concubine, it would be fortunate for him.
6肥遯,无不利。The sixth line, undivided, shows its subject retiring in a noble way. It will be advantageous in every respect.
