Hexagram 37 家人 changing to hexagram 45 萃
Changing lines (counted from the bottom): 1, 3, 4, 6.
What to read
Four changing lines: read the two unchanged lines of the resulting hexagram; the lower one is the main one. (Rule set out by Zhu Xi in the Yixue qimeng.)
The second line, divided, shows its subject led forward (by his correlate). There will be good fortune, and freedom from error. There is entire sincerity, and in that case (even the small offerings of) the vernal sacrifice are acceptable.
The fifth line, undivided, shows the union (of all) under its subject in the place of dignity. There will be no error. If any do not have confidence in him, let him see to it that (his virtue) be great, longcontinued, and firmly correct, and all occasion for repentance will disappear.
The two hexagrams
Hexagram 37 家人 — judgment
For (the realisation of what is taught in) Kiâ Zăn, (or for the regulation of the family), what is most advantageous is that the wife be firm and correct.
In (the state denoted by) Zhui, the king will repair to his ancestral temple. It will be advantageous (also) to meet with the great man; and then there will be progress and success, though the advantage must come through firm correctness. The use of great victims will conduce to good fortune; and in whatever direction movement is made, it will be advantageous.
The changing lines of hexagram 37
| Line | Chinese | Legge |
|---|---|---|
| The first line, undivided, shows its subject establishing restrictive regulations in his household. Occasion for repentance will disappear. |
| The third line, undivided, shows its subject (treating) the members of the household with stern severity. There will be occasion for repentance, there will be peril, (but) there will (also) be good fortune. If the wife and children were to be smirking and chattering, in the end there would be occasion for regret. |
| The fourth line, divided, shows its subject enriching the family. There will be great good fortune. |
| The topmost line, undivided, shows its subject possessed of sincerity and arrayed in majesty. In the end there will be good fortune. |
