Hexagram 64 未濟 changing to hexagram 41 損

wèi jì
→
sǔn

Changing lines (counted from the bottom): 1, 4.

What to read

Two changing lines: read both line texts of the original hexagram; the upper one is the main one. (Rule set out by Zhu Xi in the Yixue qimeng.)

Hexagram 64 未濟, line 4

貞吉,悔亡,震用伐鬼方,三年有賞于大國。

The fourth line, undivided, shows its subject by firm correctness obtaining good fortune, so that all occasion for repentance disappears. Let him stir himself up, as if he were invading the Demon region, where for three years rewards will come to him (and his troops) from the great kingdom.

Hexagram 64 未濟, line 1

濡其尾,吝。

The first line, divided, shows its subject (like a fox) whose tail gets immersed. There will be occasion for regret.

The two hexagrams

Hexagram 64 未濟 — judgment

亨。小狐汔濟,濡其尾,无攸利。

Wei Zî intimates progress and success (in the circumstances which it implies). (We see) a young fox that has nearly crossed (the stream), when its tail gets immersed. There will be no advantage in any way.

Hexagram 41 損 — judgment

有孚,元吉。无咎,可貞,利有攸往。曷之用?二簋可用享。

In (what is denoted by) Sun, if there be sincerity (in him who employs it), there will be great good fortune:—freedom from error; firmness and correctness that can be maintained; and advantage in every movement that shall be made. In what shall this (sincerity in the exercise of Sun) be employed? (Even) in sacrifice two baskets of grain, (though there be nothing else), may be presented.
